Walking Trails in Hideaway, TX: Funtier Park & the Nature Trail

Walking Trails in Hideaway, TX?

What are the best walking trails in Hideaway, TX? Hideaway, Texas has two walking trails inside the 24-hour gated community: the recently resurfaced perimeter path at Funtier Park and a wooded nature trail on the north side, just past the dam where Hideaway Lane East meets Rampart.

If you live in Hideaway — or you’re considering a move here — you already know this community runs on an active, outdoor lifestyle. Between 27 holes of golf, three lakes, pickleball, tennis, basketball, a soccer field, and the baseball/softball diamond at Funtier Park, there’s rarely a reason to leave the gates for exercise.

But two of the most peaceful ways to get outside here don’t involve a racquet or a golf cart. I covered both in detail on my YouTube channel, Living in East Texas — you can watch the full walk-through here — and this post is the written companion for residents who want the quick reference and for buyers trying to get a feel for day-to-day life inside the community.

I’m Rebecca Williams, a real estate professional with Leslie Cain Realty and a neighborhood expert who has lived inside Hideaway for over seven and a half years. Here’s what you need to know about both trails.

The Funtier Park Walking Path

Funtier Park has had a perimeter walking path for years, but over time the asphalt broke down and the surface got rough. The HOA board included a full resurfacing in this year’s budget, and the result is genuinely a pleasure to walk.

I took a loop around it with my best friend a few weeks ago, and a few things stood out.

What the path is like

  • Width varies. Some stretches are wide enough for three people abreast — easy to walk side-by-side and still let someone pass. Other sections narrow to single file.
  • Mostly flat. The surface is even, which is a meaningful upgrade over the old path. Much easier on the knees.
  • A few sharp turns. Especially on the west side of the park where the path passes the children’s playground — you’ll want to slow your pace there.
  • Watch the landscaping. When I walked it, a couple of shrubs had grown into the path. Nothing blocking, just a heads-up. The grounds crew typically stays on top of this.

Why it works for residents

If you have kids or grandkids, the Funtier Park path is a useful dual-purpose option. The playground sits inside the loop, so you can let older children play while you get a couple of laps in. Partner up with another parent and trade off, or simply do your walk while they’re occupied. It’s also an easy place to meet a neighbor for a morning walk without having to coordinate much beyond the time.

The Hideaway Nature Trail

The second option is completely different in character — and it’s one of the quieter secrets of living in Hideaway.

Where to find it

The nature trail is on the north side of Hideaway, just north of the dam. Take Hideaway Lane East all the way to the stop sign where it meets Rampart. You’ll have just passed the dam on your left. Turn left at the stop sign, and the walk-in entrance is right there on your right.

What makes it different

This isn’t a paved path. It’s a wooded, shaded trail that Hideaway residents and a local community organization have foraged and maintained themselves. The feel is pure East Texas forest — tree canopy overhead, quiet, and cooler than the open path at Funtier Park even in the warmer months.

A small detail that’s become a tradition: there’s a small Bigfoot doll hidden somewhere on the nature trail. The community plays a find-and-rehide game with it, similar to the painted rock tradition. If you find Bigfoot, you’re expected to hide him again somewhere else on the trail. From what I hear, he gets around.

It’s a small thing, but it’s the kind of detail that tells you something about this community — residents actively making the place more fun to live in.

Which Trail Should You Use?

Both, honestly. They serve different purposes.

If you’re trying to hit a step count or get a workout in, Funtier Park is your better bet. If you want to be outside, hear birds, and feel the trees, the nature trail is the one. Most residents I know use both depending on the day and the weather.

Why This Matters for Buyers Considering Hideaway

If you’re looking at Hideaway from the outside, it’s easy to focus on the headline amenities — the gated entries, the 27-hole golf course, the three lakes, the clubhouse. Those are real. But the day-to-day experience of living here is built on the smaller things: the morning walk, the chance encounter with a neighbor, the fact that somebody thought to hide a Bigfoot doll on the trail because kids love it.

Hideaway sits inside Lindale Independent School District, roughly 30–45 minutes to Tyler for medical, shopping, and dining at UT Health East Texas, CHRISTUS Mother Frances, and the broader Tyler retail corridor. But once you’re inside the gates, the lifestyle is its own thing. Two walking trails, two completely different vibes, both inside a 24-hour gated community — that’s the kind of specificity that’s hard to appreciate until you’re here.

The trails — and the rest of the community — are something you really have to experience to understand. And because Hideaway is a 24-hour gated community, you can’t simply show up at the gate and expect to get in; the gate attendants won’t always be able to reach me in real time.
